“On Shakespeare” by John Milton is a poem specifically written for Shakespeare and his work. John classifies Shakespeare as a sort of timeless-writer, that will live forever through this poem with literary devices and elegant words to support his love for Shakespeare.
John Milton was born on December 9, 1608 in London into a middle-class family. John was the second of five children, however only three would survive to adulthood. In later times, Milton wrote that we was born “of an honest family; my father was distinguished by the undeviating integrity of his life; my mother, by the esteem in which she was held, and the alms which she bestowed.” The household of the Milton’s was overshadowed by the belief in the importance of education, and Christian values. After graduating St.Paul’s School then Christ’s College (Cambridge), Milton began to write poetry in Italian, English and Latin. The credit for his writing career was credited to his father, who “destined me from a child to the pursuits of literature.” Milton makes no allusion to mourning and death in the poem commemorating him. Much of the poem was John flourishing Shakespeare’s life and work with sincere gratitude in his choice of words.
Originally under the title name, “An Epitaph on the Admirable Dramatic Poet, W. Shakespeare.”, John Milton honors the death of one of the most inspirational and “immortal” writers of all time. Popular in life and death, Shakespeare was an inspiration to John. Through his words, one can feel the admiration John had towards Shakespeare. This poem revolves around Shakespeare’s legacy and how much he meant to John as a prodigious writer of his century.
In the text, John uses several different literary devices to convey his message in a clean manner. For instance, he uses imagery with words such as “relics”, “pyramids”, “bones”, “monuments”, “marble”. All these words have tangible and solid imagery to them. In the text he also uses many metaphors to support his stance of Shakespeare’s legacy. After reading this poem, readers can determine that Shakespeare was honored by John Milton. Instead of a mourning sequence of his death, John writes about Shakespeare’s legacy as a writer in the literature world and what impact he has made on not only John, but the world as well. This poem was merely about the gratitude and respect for Shakespeare

Claire's Essay
There is no perfection in writing. Everyone has their own style, and writing can always be improved. As you look over one’s essays and revise it to make it better, that process can not only improve one’s piece but can also improve your literary skills. Looking at Michelle’s piece on her Quadruple P Project, I was able to get a good grasp of her clear and concise content, improve her flow, and learn through revising her writing.
Michelle’s writing had a clear statement on who John Milton was, and how much he valued Shakespeare. “John Milton was born on December 9, 1608 in London into a middle-class family. John was the second of five children”. This clear statement can tell us briefly information on who exactly John Milton is. “The household of the Milton’s was overshadowed by the belief in the importance of education, and Christian values”. This can tell us that he was a devoted Puritan and as he inspired Shakespeare, “Milton makes no allusion to mourning and death in the poem commemorating him. Much of the poem was John flourishing Shakespeare’s life and work with sincere gratitude in his choice of words”. She also explains in detail how John Milton used several literary devices to make his poetry more interesting. Her writing was straight to the point which did not waver the reader and delivered the significance of the poem, John Milton and Shakespeare. By reading her essay, I can tell how much John valued Shakespeare and his work.
A stream cannot flow without water. Michelle’s writing was nice and clear but making her piece more solid and smooth would turn it into a better piece of writing. In her writing, I found many keywords like John and Milton which is the writer for Michelle’s poem, “On Shakespeare”. I revised her essay by calling him only by his first name, John, and sometimes with his full name. In her essay, she sometimes called him John, sometimes Milton, and also with his full name. Organising and unifying it will make the writing more smooth and strong. As I improved her essay, I divided it into 3 strategies to revise. I first checked her grammar, then added and eliminated some words to make the writing more smooth, and then switched some placement of words. By doing this, I was able to improve her writing and make it into one smooth piece. Although I really liked her content and her style of writing, revising it and improving it will make the piece into a better writing.
The process of learning from others can occur anytime, anywhere. Usually, when people want to improve on something, they take good examples and copy them. That is one easy way to learn and improve. This goes the same with revising Michelle’s writing. As I was revising her piece, it was difficult to leave her piece as good as it is, and revise it. As a writer, you want to include your own thoughts in the creative piece and yet you cannot change the content. Everyone has different styles of excellence and different styles of writing. For one, the writing may seem excellent but for the other, it may seem lacking, and there are no such thing as excellence. People can improve day after day, and the same goes with writing. As I revised her essay, I learnt that improvement is infinite and is always the key to perfection.
Understanding, and making it better made me improve my literary skills by making myself understand that there are different styles of writing, and different definitions for perfection. However, improvement does not have a limit and can still improve something as far as it can. Any professional writer can still improve their writing and their style as well. I liked how Michelle had her writing clear and concise with many details. I did not want to change it that much since I respect her style and I pretty much like it. This process of learning from others can improve not only the writing but also the editor and by revising Michelle's Quadruple P essay, I was able to get a good grasp of her clear and concise content, as well as improving her flow and learn through revising her writing.
